Hypocrisy reigns

B.C. accused of salary increase ‘double standard’, CBC News, May 3, 2012

Cabinet staffers got average 10-per-cent hike while ‘net-zero’ offered elsewhere.

B.C.’s teachers and many provincial government workers might have been forced to accept “net-zero” contracts, but several staffers working for premier Christy Clark and other cabinet ministers have received substantial salary increases in the past year, CBC News has learned.

The results of a Freedom of Information request show that nearly half of 34 ministerial employees who were named received a raise in the past year with an average 10-per-cent increase.

The lowest increase was six per cent, the documents show.

One executive assistant in Clark’s office saw her salary jump from $51,300 to $61,560, a 20-per-cent hike…

  2. I heard a clip on CBC radio, from (perhaps?) the environment minister. She didn't have specifics, but said the increases would be from grid lifts — just like for teachers. Grid lifts for teachers take the first 10 or 11 'apprenticeship' years, typically, then disappear after that. I just calculated the percentage lift in our district and it looks to be in the 4 to 5.2% range, depending on the category.

I don't want to help the Liberals sound 'good' — but I like to be fair, if it's warranted. Teachers have often complained about the long apprenticeship before full wages are earned. Perhaps government has a more realistic time-line. If teachers were up to full pay after only 5 years, for example, this would take 10% grid lifts each year.

  3. No, after clicking on “read accounts of similar…” scroll down past the current story and see all others linked by the label “Not-Net-Zero.” The current article is simply those most recent with the label, the remaining posts with that link show in time order.

  4. Apparently we just don’t understand; everyone has to accept net zero. After all, how else could the liberals afford to give their friends raises?

Norm, here I get the cbc story when I click on the link at the top of the posting. BUT, the link that starts with the text “Read accounts of similar examples”….) at the bottom of your posting just returns me to your posting……using Mozilla Firefox.

  5. I read the article online this morning but now can't find it on CBC website. Hope you can “freeze” the article so it is not lost. Hopefully it will get some further traction in BC.

  6. I understand that CKNW and VP and KB are explaining that these raises are ones that all contracts include as one moves from one pay scale to the next. A pay grid that gives an incremental raise of 6%. NFL! A pay grid that gives an incremental raise of 10%? Never! And one that gives a raise of 20%??? Get stuffed!

  7. What do you expect from the champions of “free enterprise”? Do as I say and not as I do. This government has to be tossed, like yesterdays garbage. Sorry folks, the double standard in BC just does'nt cut it, anymore. Especially with the clowns, at the ledge.
