Demagoguery

On the information platform Medium, Jack Dallaire describes himself: “Former tech CEO turned journalist-in-training. Psychology degree holder with a mission to uncover how tech giants are shaping a digital dystopia.” He wrote a piece about Pierre Poilievre that is worth attention. Excerpts follow:

Unmasking Pierre Poilievre: The Demagogue’s Playbook and Its Dangers for Canada

In recent years, political figures using demagoguery to gain power have become increasingly common. In Canada, Pierre Poilievre is one such example. This article breaks down his psychological and political tactics, showing how he uses them and explaining why they are dangerous for our society. We will also draw parallels with Donald Trump and the MAGA movement in the United States, as well as the QAnon cult, a fertile ground for conspiracy theories that are also gaining traction in our country…

Here are some characteristics of a demagogue:

  • Exploiting statistics by distorting correlations disguised as causalities to influence opinion
  • Promoting conspiracy theories when necessary
  • Undermining public trust in institutions
  • Polarizing society through rhetoric
  • Attacking opponents with personal insults, portraying them as enemies of the people and dehumanizing them

…For a demagogue and his base, complex political issues are often reduced to simple, binary choices. This tactic, known as a “false dilemma,” allows people to form an opinion without fully understanding the nuances. Poilievre is an expert at using this method to frame all debates in a way that supports his agenda…

Pierre Poilievre’s Use of Demagoguery:

  • Conspiracy theories and misleading correlations
  • Undermining trust in institutions
  • Erosion of democratic norms
  • Increased polarization
  • Spread of misinformation
  • Normalization of hostility

…Poilievre and Trump use similar demagogic tactics. They exploit emotions, promote conspiracy theories, and undermine institutions.

Strategies to Counter Demagoguery:

  • Promote media literacy
  • Encourage critical thinking
  • Foster democratic engagement

Recognizing demagoguery is the first step in protecting democracy. It requires critical thinking, media literacy, and a commitment to democratic values. Canadians must remain vigilant and informed to prevent the rise of leaders who threaten the fabric of our society through manipulative and dangerous tactics. The threat may seem vague at the moment, but it is very real. Most great autocrats and aspiring dictators were elected democratically before burning the sacred fabric of our democracies…

  1. The “Wee P” has been and still is a Trumpian wannabe. His and his American corn pone conservatives sole campaign has been to attack Trudeau.

Well Trudeau is out of the race and the “Wee P” is running on empty as his “poster star”, the Mango Mussolini wants to make Canada his 51st state.

I have framed this vile attack on Canada in that one is a “Churchill” or one is a Quisling”. The “Wee P” certainly seems leaning to the latter and what Canada needs is a government of “Churchill’s”.

Let us hope that the Canadian voter is a lot smarter than the American counterpart.
