Defending democracy

Ordinary people must choose between authoritarianism and democracy. Our ancestors struggled to gain the vote; we must protect these rights.

Are we willing to do that? Do we even understand the fragility of our political system?

The concept of collective policy-making has existed for millennia, but the near-universal right for citizens to choose the rulers has a short history.

Canada was well into the 20th century before women could vote. Chinese, Japanese and South Asian Canadians were unwelcome at polling stations for much of the last century.

It was not until 1960 that Canada’s government stopped discouraging Indigenous people from voting.

Powerful groups are working to delegitimize and obstruct democratic institutions. Rising economic inequality and fear of racial and cultural differences contribute to conditions that empower authoritarians.

CANADA WEST FORUM, a nonprofit society, will present its first online forum: DEFENDING DEMOCRACY.

Experts will present a brief history of democracy, consider threats to it, and discuss ways to protect voting rights and citizen influence over governments.

To participate in this forum, join our group by using Zeffy1, subscribe to this website and watch for details about this first event. The fastest and least-cost way to contribute is by e-transfer. Use the email address canadawestforum@gmail.com and funds will be immediately deposited to the society’s account at Vancity. Spending is supervised by the nonprofit society’s five-member Board of Directors.
