Canada West Forum is presenting an online event available without cost on a Zoom livestream, Monday, March 9, 10:15 a.m. Moderated by filmmaker and environmental journalist Damien Gillis, the panel features three highly regarded individuals. They are:
Glen Clark is well known in British Columbia, having served nearly 15 years as a Vancouver MLA, including eight years as a cabinet minister and as Premier from 1996 to 1999. After leaving politics, he joined the Jim Pattison Group, the largest privately held conglomerate based in British Columbia and one of the largest in Canada. Clark rose through management ranks the company to become President and Chief Operating Officer, serving in that role until his retirement at the end of 2022. Almost instantly after, he was appointed Chair of BC Hydro.
Jae Mather is CEO of Carbon Free Group and Chief Innovation Officer at ClimateDoor, where he leads the EU-Canada Low Carbon Business Action cleantech bridge project. With more than 25 years of experience in innovation, cleantech, and sustainability policy across British Columbia, Europe, and the UK, he has helped shape government and private-sector approaches to low-carbon development. Mather previously served as Executive Director of the Clean Energy Association of British Columbia and is an advisory board member of Simon Fraser University’s Clean Energy Research Group.
Markham Hislop has worked in journalism for more than 30 years, including over a decade covering clean technology and the global energy transition. He is publisher of Energi Media, where for more than 11 years he has interviewed energy experts from around the world. His articles, podcasts, and video programs earn millions of impressions each year. Hislop argues that the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydro is inevitable, but cautions that fossil fuel industries will remain powerful competitors throughout the transition.

The panel will examine the future of energy supplies in British Columbia and the key decisions that must be made to meet rising demand. Glen Clark will discuss how the province’s public utility plans to deliver reliable electricity as British Columbia accelerates the electrification of homes, businesses, and transportation systems. The conversation will explore the opportunities and challenges involved in powering a growing, increasingly electric economy. With large new hydro projects increasingly unlikely, attention is turning to other renewable sources—particularly wind, solar, and geothermal, including emerging enhanced and advanced geothermal technologies.

I am proud to be one of the founders of the Canada West Forum Society. As a start-up organization, we are working to make the most of the funds provided by our members while remaining independent—free from commercial interests and political ideologies.
Our goal is to bring knowledgeable experts together to discuss the important issues of our time. At a moment when trust in expertise has eroded and specialized knowledge is often dismissed in favour of social media voices and peer opinion, thoughtful dialogue with informed professionals is more important than ever.
Founder Pat McCutcheon hopes Canada West Forum can become a place where knowledge is shared, ideas are tested, and better public understanding begins.
In The Death of Expertise as a Decline of Trust, the subheadline offered a serious warning:
When we trust our feelings more than anything else, we stop trusting expert knowledge. And it could kill us.
