Naval deployment

As a change from the usual subjects at In-Sights, here are photographs © taken by Lorne Simpson of Victoria, a friend of 50 years or so. Lorne is a keen observer and a multitalented artist. To record scenes, he might use a paint brush or his phone, but he might also use a 4″ X 5″ large format camera. I think these photos might interest readers of In-Sights.

August 14, the frigates HMCS Ottawa and HMCS Vancouver, alongside supply ship MV Asterix, departed from Esquimalt for a five month deployment in the Indo-Pacific Region. It’s always an important moment when the warships set out and, so, a traditional sail by occurred along the city’s coastline for friends, family and local folks to say goodbye.

  1. My father was in the RCN from 1944 to 45 and served on the Frigate HMCS Levis (now appearing as a breakwater up the costs), serving on the North Atlantic during the winter of 44/45. My mom always wondered why my dad would never take a holiday on a cruise ship!

Navy: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision. Civilian: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to South to avoid a collision. Navy: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert your course. Civilian: No, I say again, divert your course. Navy: This is the aircraft carrier Enterprise. We are a large warship of the US Navy. Divert your course now!! Civilian: This is a lighthouse. Your call. Canadian naval radio conversation38 — John D. Barrow

  2. I started my apprenticeships, Shipwright / Ships Joiner, at Burrard Dry Dock where one of the vessels we built was the CCGS Parizeau (Namesake: Henri Dalpe Parizeau, hydrographer). The Feds sold it off as scrap, but was ‘saved’ and converted into running drugs. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/scrap-in-the-trash-led-to-uk-drug-bust/article4257335/

Renamed the ‘Destiney Empress’, it was seized off the coast of Spain with 1.5 tonnes of cocaine concealed in a hidden compartment.
