The fragile state of democracy in 2024

In a 2022 virtual appearance at the University of Toronto, Canadian author Margaret Atwood talked about the future of democracy. She warned about the “deliberate creation of chaos” by those who prefer authoritarianism.

Financial Times editor Roula Khalaf said Atwood also participated in an editorial initiative to provide expert commentary about the fragile state of democracy in 2024.

Others appearing in the FT series include:

  • Aditi Mittal, one of the first women to do stand-up comedy in India,
  • Elif Shafak, a Turkish-British novelist,
  • Lola Shoneyin, Nigerian writer and teacher

  1. Democracy is just a word, nothing more. Prior to the electronic media (radio and TV) democracy was a watered down version of a divine monarchy, with a change of “kings” at regular intervals.

Until about 120 years ago, mostly the wealthy men could vote and if those elected had any modicum of honour (honour is a word without meaning in today’s politic) the system creaked along.

The British form of “democracy” seemed fine in the days of yore, but today, with a single vote, simple plurality, does not reflect today’s voters. Other forms of “democracy” in Europe have refined “democracy” to more able reflect the wishes of the voting public.

The Russian form of “democracy” is based on the ability of not falling out of a window” and then there is the US form of democracy.

The USA’s democracy is based on big, big money and the ability to cater to the monied class, to elect a “strongman” for four years. The American form of democracy has not evolved and is still stuck in its 18th centruy origins, which election can be fixed with 21st century technology.

Canada is going to have a grand stand seat of the spectacle of two aged persons, one much more demented than the other, both unfit for today’s problems.

Canadians are going to see the demise of American democracy and the rise of a true Fascist state, voted in by a population so dumbed down by partisan propaganda, from the electronic media, where a “strongman”. will rule with almost divine right.

I find it strange that after 250 years, the USA will be ruled by a “king”, far more harsh, far more ignorant, far more murderous, far more racist than the King’s government they rebelled against in 1776.

We are about to live in interesting times.
