Everything is not broken

In the House of Commons, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre told Canadians:

No. Everything is not broken.

Canada offers extraordinary beauty, much of it unspoiled by development. We live in a culturally diverse nation with excellent systems of education, community services, transportation and communications. We have world-class libraries and recreational facilities that serve all, from toddlers to seniors.

No citizen is denied treatment or bankrupted by the cost of healthcare. Life expectancy of Canadians ranks in the top 10% of all nations. Our system of justice is trusted and respected by a vast majority of the population. Median wealth held by Canadian individuals ranks second among nations populated by more than 25 million adults.

Canada is imperfect, but it is far from broken.

We could be working for improvement by protecting the earth and helping people who need assistance. Rage farmers don’t do those things. They seek power and influence by poisoning politics and trying to convince individuals to hate people they don’t even know.

  1. Good points, Norm. I suppose the strategy is to promise solutions during the election campaign, but I find Polievre’s attack dog style alienating rather than attractive.

  2. As the Trudeau Liberals try to remake Canada in his own image and the NDP being nothing more than a wet squib, the Conservatives are owning the narrative.

Trudeau’s tax and spend era and his capitulation to the international cartels that are milking the consumer to death, the conservatives are defining the next election.

A country like Canada can stand only so much of this and after, it fragments into vicious politcal tribes, all unwilling to listen to the others. Our neighbours south of the 49th are an excellent example of this.

Politicians are no longer loyal to the electorate, but to the party and the party leader.

I was related to a former Liberal cabinet minister who was in office from the 1950’s to the 70’s and every year he held a park size picnic for everyone, with prizes galore fore everyone all out of his own pocket. he talked to everyone. Even though he was a cabinet member his office was open for everyone and if he was in Vancouver, in his office he would meet you.

Today’s politician is a different cat altogether, all higher purpose persons, arrogant, and sadly ignorant and all they care about is being reelected. Their tenure in office is nothing more than a larger stipend; to holiday in the sun; and to be treated as royalty.

It is the politcal system that is broken and our current lot in parliament, the legislature and city hall no longer represent the people but those with money, who have bought them.

    • “the politicians are no longer loyal to the electorate”. Few ever were. As an old operative used to say, The first order of business for any political power is to stay in power.” When I look back That pretty much sums up politics.

When I look at the federal political parties don’t recall the conservatives passing any legistlation which improved the lives of Canadians. Certianly life improved for the “monied classes”, the rest of us not so much. While the liberals were in office, lets see we got CPP, federal disability program, health care, monthly cheques for families who live under the poverty line so they can adequately feed and house their kids, dental care for some. In 1971 the current P.M.’s father passed federal legislation to over haul the Unemployment Insurance program now known as Employment Insurance. For the first time women had paid maternity leave. You have no idea how big a deal that was. You could qualify for U.I. after working for 8 weeks. Made life a whole lot easier for people in the Maritimes and those in seasonal jobs. The rates increased so people could afford to eat and pay rent.

In some of those cases legislation was passed with the support of the NDP.

Can’t remember the Conservatives or P.C. doing anything like that. Do know Harper gave tax breaks to people whose children were in organized sports,, but that only works for those who already have money because if you don’t have money up front, you don’t have money.

I’d like to see PP survive on the DTES on welfar rates for month. Back in the day a B.C. M.LA. , Emory Barnes did it twice. First time he lost 20 pounds

  3. Surely Pierre Poilievre is the result of the boy who cried wolf mating with Chicken Little. The result is neither pretty nor helpful.

He’s spent virtually his entire career sucking the public teat he says itself sucks. He apparently can’t see the udder for the nipples.

There’s over a year to go before his hysterical pronouncements are examined in the cold hard light just outside the ballot box (barring the NDP taking the training wheels off Trudeau’s bike in the interim). That’s plenty of time for voters to realize that chickenboy’s main strategy is to devise solutions that benefit him and his, and then invent straw men problems those for solutions. How very conservative of him.

  4. Norm,, as you point out not all is broken in Canada, well except perhaps PP and some of his followers and his “friend/mentor” Harper. He obviously has not been in a country that is “broken”. Perhaps he’d like to take a walk through some Central American countries or area’s in Africa or South America. For that matter, he could have a look at G.B. Their homelessness is worse than ours and their health care is also worse.

If we want to look at what was broken in Canada, he and his pal Harper contributed to some really nasty stuff which can break a country

    • defunded all federally funded Womens groups as soon as Harper was elected.
    • passed 9 pieces of federal legislation which Harper and gang were advised were violations of the Constituion. Then some nice lawyers in Ontario and other parts, took the Federal government to court and the Supreme Court of Canada over turned all 9 bills.
    • Harper and gang decided to spend less on Indigenous children, living on reserves, than other children in the country, when it came to health and education. They went to the Human rights Commission and a settlement was eventually come to, but it cost the country a bomb. Now why would a government decide to spend less money on one group of children
    •  Was it hatred, racism, a way to save money without too many others becoming aware.  I do recall hearing about Jewish children being expelled from schools once herr Hitler took over countries.
    • Ah, our Supreme Court, Harper attempted to install a Judge who was not qualified but much more in line with Harper’s thinking. Perhaps that is where Trump got the idea. Fortunately our country is not so broken that this type of thing can’t be fixed

I could go on, but everyone will get bored and my fingers are getting sore.

Now what has Trudeau done, well parents started to receive money each month to bring families which children above the poverty line, about 250K–not bad. Child care is being improved, along with dental care and the Liberals are trying to have more housing built. Our P.M. does not look like an idiot or go around saying our country is broken. If PP thinks Canada is broken then he doesn’t have much pride in it and he is also useless in this case because I haven’t seen that boy do anything to improve things in the country. Oh right he met with some protestors in Ottawa who were making life unbearable for citizens of Ottawa, fouling the air with their trucks, etc.

Mulroney was not the best of P.M.s.  Just have a read of On the Take, The Mulroney years.

Both of these Conservative leaders left a bigger deficient than the Liberal P.M.s

Canada is not broken. I’m proud of this country which has provided our family with a decent life–O.K. more like the dream
