Climate Change

Yes, we should be very worried

Pat Mccutcheon is running for the BC Greens in Surrey Cloverdale. He recently pointed me to this video and said:

.

A few comments published with the video:

  • Sadly, the forces for economic progress, imperial dominance, political power, and short term personal comfort have proven to be far stronger than the forces for preserving the planet.
  • I don’t think he should have ended it on a hopeful note at all. End it with the graph saying where we are actually headed, not the impossible graph where the rich give up money and power.
  • At this point we’re just rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic. The trickle of enlightenment that exists in our civilization cannot hold back the tsunami of ignorance, greed and self-interest…

Like other Green Party candidates in BC’s October 19 election, Pat McCutcheon is focused on climate change, but he also cares about the BC Government’s failures in education, healthcare, housing, homelessness and addiction services.

The right-wing party of big business that ruled BC from 2001 to 2017 cared little about protecting the environment and delivering effective social services. The BC NDP have been a little better on social issues but arguably worse on climate and environmental issues. According to Canada Energy Regulator, fossil fuel production in BC has increased 58% between 2017 and 2024

Vote for me. No vote for me.

We ought not to vote for old line parties. It is time for change in the Legislature but replacing the NDP government with a new coalition of Big Business will do nothing to address the most important issue of our time.

The impacts of climate change are being felt across the planet. The scale and potential consequences of climate change make it a top priority that requires immediate and concerted action by all provinces. Only the BC Greens are prepared to have British Columbia do its part to ensure that Canada’s climate action promises translate into meaningful emissions reductions and a sustainable future.

  1. Thank you Norm for recognizing my candidacy in Surrey-Cloverdale for the BC Green party. The TED Talk video from this posting should be required viewing by all British Columbians before they cast their vote this October.

Over the last several decades the province of British Columbia has slid deeper and deeper into decay.  Our addiction to fossil fuels has led to an accelerating cycle of extreme climate change events such as wildfires, floods and heat waves.  A livable planet for future generations is rapidly becoming questionable.

Homelessness continues to rise under the burden of rising costs and an increase in mental health issues.  Housing is a human right and we need to treat it as such.  The toxic drug crisis continues to take six lives per day in BC.  Since being declared a public emergency in 2016 nearly 15,000 people have died.  The wealth gap in BC continues to widen pushing more and more families into poverty.  This cannot continue.

This is not the British Columbia I want to live in or future generations to grow into.  I believe we have a moral and ethical obligation to reverse these trends.

The policies and decision making from traditional BC political parties have landed us in this position and it is very doubtful we can expect meaningful change from them.  I am running in Cloverdale with the BC Green party because I am convinced they have developed progressive, evidence-based solutions that will lead to positive change in people’s lives.

When developing solutions the BC Greens engage with sector experts, front line workers and those individuals impacted.

I invite all your readers to step forward and help elect BC Green party candidates. Nothing will change unless there are more Greens in Victoria. If you can help out with my campaign the contact info is below.

We can and must do better. Thank you for any help you can provide.

  2. I too wonder HOW BCers can be brainwashed into backing more ecocidal wreckage, stagnating last-century economics & tax breaks for billionaires –i.e. same-old M.O.s of EVERY party but the BCGreens!!? It’s like suicide: I don’t get it.

So once again you’ve hit the nail – tks! BCers need to know this stuff to be informed voters in Oct.

I’d only add that ‘Summer’ has become ‘Fire season’ DUE TO DEFORESTATION BY clearcut logging (& subsequent spraying/ replanting w/ monocultures) by greedy corps, tks to Govt’s lax environmental laws. Yet all parties xcept the Greens say logging in BC is “sustainable”: a BLATANT LIE that only confirms their deadly plans to put polluters b4 people..

    & that’s so YESTERDAY!!

No need to mention ‘Climate’: WE are to blame, so WE must make things right (for our kids at the very least!)
