| In the span of only a couple weeks, we saw Florida get struck by two devastating hurricanes Neighbourhoods were swept away, and the toll—both emotional and financial—was staggering, with people and animals losing their homes and billions of dollars in damage. These disasters are a stark warning of what lies ahead if we—or, perhaps more accurately, fossil fuel companies—continue business as usual. The online conspiracy theory saying the weather is being controlled is kind of true… It’s being controlled by the very companies who repeatedly ignore the science and continue to extract oil and gas, at the expense of our lives and livelihoods. For decades, these oil companies have known their activities are a major driver of climate change. Yet, with only their profits in mind, they have continuously ignored the science, buried the evidence, made up false narratives, and disregarded the catastrophic impacts on the climate. The result? Stronger storms, destructive wildfires, rising sea levels, and the devastation of communities like we just saw in Florida, or closer to home, in Jasper this summer. It’s time we held these fossil fools accountable. Later is too late—we urgently need to make fossil fuel polluters pay for the climate disasters they’re fuelling. It is not up to people like you and me to foot the bill when they are knowingly profiting from the destruction of our future. Make Big Oil pay into a Climate Recovery Fund |

I’m sorry, but this idea sounds too much like licensing fentanyl dealers. “We’re aware of the damage you cause and the lives you take, but dammit you’re going to pay for the funerals.”
The real solution, as much as we might not want to confront or admit it, becomes clearer if one reads the GreenPeace statement with a few edits.

I say this knowing there are few polluters more guilty than yours truly, but the fact is that it is us using the oil and gas products that are causing the problem and refusing to demand and elect leaders that will enact and facilitate effective alternatives. Taxing our pushers doesn’t attack the core problem; as good as it might initially look or feel.
