I have not been a fan of Trudeau’s Liberal Government. It began in 2015 with great promise. I particularly remember the apparent respect paid to Canada’s Indigenous people. However, that was as hollow as the regular acknowledgments of unceded land. Liberals have been good at making those announcements, but when corporations want to trespass on unceded territory, the federal government has been happy to see the RCMP wade in with force to cede traditional lands to resource companies. Journalists were targeted for arrest because the RCMP wanted to ensure only friendly journalists reported on their activities.
I can’t forget when the federal police force was prepared to shoot people for staying on the lands their ancestors had occupied for millennia.

Liberals have been half-hearted in the fight against climate change, and they’ve turned over tens of billions of taxpayer dollars to the country’s largest goods-producing industry. Trudeau’s government has a warm place in the pockets of wealthy oil and gas companies.
Nevertheless, all that I think is wrong with the Liberal government would be even worse if Donald Trump’s friend Pierre Poilievre moves into 24 Sussex Drive. I think Canadians need to organize today for the next federal election. The continued existence of our country may be at stake.

Trudeau tried to make Canada into his own image, a flaky philosophy of “Post National” nonsense.
The “Wee P”, and his Conservatives follow (until it was politcal suicide) the equally flaky MAGA Trump philosophy of greed, avarice and duplicity.
Singh and the NDP are absolutely lost in a world of make believe and glories past, with the BC branch morphing into Vision(less) Vancouver Provincial, with is somewhat like MAGA Lite.
Where does this leave Canada?
Canadians have been let down by our politcans and politcal parties. The politcal machines that control the politcal parties have gamed the system especially with civic politics.
Who is not afraid to bell the cat? Who is not afraid to demand change?
What we see south of the 49th is what will come to Canada, if voters go tribal like the USA and we should ask pointed questions of all those running for office on how they will restore trust in the government.
This federal election I will vote and not Green, Conservative or NDP; I will vote for someone who will see Canada, remain Canada. Even if I have to hold my nose and vote, I will vote!

Norm I have liked your post for years now, but this time I must disagree. The country needs a 180 degree change of direction, the left has left us weak. At 74 I have seen enough of Canadian politics to qualify an opinion. Directional change should happen every 8 years just to help keep those in power more honest. Every long term regime whether federal or provincial ends up been stale or corrupt. I hear all kinds of totally fake news about Poilievure’s plans, sure he wants the job, but Canadians are a middle liberal country, not far right so I feel he will not be able to make all those drastic scary changes the left is telling us. We need a new direction!

Yes, Canada may need a new direction, but it should be a better course, not one that is fraught with greater danger. I believe that leaders like the PM should face term limits. Trudeau has had ten years to affect public policy and doesn’t deserve more time.
In the days when the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives were Canada’s two main parties, radical changes did not happen when one replaced the other. However, Harper dropped policies that could be viewed as progressive and moved that party from the centre to the right.
I have not forgotten that Harper used thuggish political tactics. He muzzled scientists and opposed Indigenous interventions when resource companies wanted to access unceded territories. Conservatives remain anti-science today, and, according to journalist Paul Wells, Harper has been counseling Poilievre to move even further right and take strong actions against critics.
Despite Conservative rhetoric about fiscal responsibility, Harper’s government presided over the massive growth of public debt. Poilievre’s Conservatives aim to privatize healthcare and follow the American model, where huge medical debts burden millions of people. A very large number are forced to declare bankruptcy each year because of healthcare debts. Privatization opens doors for companies like UnitedHealthCare that specialize in denying coverage to chronically ill patients.
Harper’s government also wanted to deregulate the banking system and privatize Canada Pension Plan investments. They loosened regulations designed to ensure food safety and slow-walked clean water initiatives in remote communities. In general, Conservatives want businesses to regulate themselves. Inequality is seen to result from individual human failures, not because of power imbalances and systemic problems such as unequal opportunity.
Harper Conservatives cut spending on programs like childcare but spent billions on subsidizing the highly profitable oil and gas industry. Perhaps most dangerous of all, right-wing politicians typically dismiss climate science and deny that it is something that may cause severe consequences for humans and wildlife.
