Now is not the moment to remain silent

Facebook has plenty of flaws, but as a stopped clock does twice a day, it can provide useful information. It was on Facebook that I saw a quote by American writer and editor Naomi Shulman. That led me to a piece she published ten days after Trump was elected President in 2016.

Emboldened by Congressional cowardice and a corrupt Supreme Court, America’s Oligarch-in-Chief is even more dangerous than when Shulman warned her nation eight years ago:

Facebook friend Rob Dresser commented after the Shulman post:

The comment led me to learn more about the book. A review published by The Times 22 years ago reminded that “the first country to be occupied by the Nazis was not Austria or Czechoslovakia. It was Germany.”

Some believe an occupation like the one that began in Germany 90+ years ago is happening now in the USA. Journalist Kathryn Joyce told Salon that Christofascists are playing a central role in Trump’s MAGA movement. Religious figure played a part when the Nazis rose to political prominence in 1930s Germany.

Christianity’s Role in the Rise of the Nazis

A few readers tell me I have focused too much on the American political scene. Those people may be Trump admirers or they may prefer to be part of the “silent resistance” that chooses not to resist.

Jolly Good. Self-censorship should be encouraged.

Why should Canadians bother themselves over a neighbour gone Postal and threatening the entire block? That meeting in Yalta where Russia got control of Eastern Europe? No big deal at all. Far off catastrophes can’t possibly affect us here.

‘Thirty to forty’ House GOP lawmakers at risk of 2026 defeat due to Trump: analyst
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” analyst Dave Jolly, who previously served as a Republican in the House representing Florida, was asked whether the actions of Donald Trump and Elon Musk are “waking up the sleepy beast” that is the electorate.

“So the math is pretty simple here,” he elaborated. “If we saw Democratic districts in Florida move 15, 16, 17 points, imagine now if you’re an incumbent Republican and a five-point seat, a four-point seat, a six-point seat. You’re terrified. And you know, that’s about 30 to 40 members of Congress right now, because now they’re coming for you next.”

Facing the consequences of their mad emperor’s 13 trillion dollar global market wipe out lots of Americans hit the streets Saturday. The BBC asked protesters what they were up to and took several snaps. In short millions made their resistance public. Why assume it will end there?

“Crowds of protesters gathered in cities across the US on Saturday to denounce President Trump, in the largest nationwide show of opposition since the president took office in January.”

“The “Hands Off” protest planners aimed to hold rallies in 1,200 locations, including in all 50 US states. Hundreds of thousands of people turned out in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC, among other cities.”

Millionaire Marjory Taylor Greene managed to save her fortune by moving it into T-bills before Trump’s tariffs hit the market.

“Marge Greene made some hefty trades in the days leading up to El Cheeto’s tariff announcement that tanked the stock market. Why, it’s almost as if she knew what was coming! Via the Daily Mail: “

“The MAGA proponent made 15 investments between March 16 and March 24. Her three largest moves were putting hundreds of thousands of dollars towards US Treasury Bills, also know as T-Bills.”

“T-Bills are short-term debt obligations that are considered low risk, so they may bring in lower returns than other kinds of investments.”

“On March 16, March 19 and March 24, Greene spent $100,000 to $250,000 per transaction on T-Bills, according to Capitol Trades, a platform devoted to sharing politician trading data. The Trump ally invested between $300,000 and $750,000 in Treasuries, according to the filings. “

  2. It is hard to NOT pay attention to a bus on fire in the ditch… unless you’re living a cloistered life.

This morning, Trump announced a 90-day relaxing of his tariff war (other than against China), throwing cups of water on the global blaze he had caused.

I referee (and play) soccer multiple times a week, and I had the thought: “What if I officiated a game the way that Trump runs his government?!” The verbal feedback would be immediate — and if I kept it up, I’d soon be removed from my position.

  3. Mr. Stewart,

As each day passes things may become more clear.

Chris Murphy, Democrat, has an opinion about why Donald Trump ran for President.

Mr. Musk deeply regrets having to investigate and defund certain nasty investigators…

“DOGE overlord Elon Musk is now aiming his crosshairs at the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), a move that flies in the face of Donald Trump’s denials claiming that the Tesla CEO had no conflicts of interest as he embarks on a federal firing and cost-cutting crusade.”

“This time Musk is investigating the exact same agency that is currently targeting him – and fined him $22 million for security violations in a past case.”
