Canada’s dangerous neighbour

American companies own more than half of foreign-controlled corporate assets in Canada. How long before Donald Trump decides to “protect” his country’s interests and security? The Trump administration may blame Canada for allowing drugs and migrants into the USA. Parts of the USA have coveted Canada’s fresh water, and American companies dislike this country’s tax system and public spending, which favours climate action, environmental protection, public healthcare and other “leftist” schemes.

Canadians who are not concerned about the American threat are naive.

BBC reports today:

US President Donald Trump has been discussing “a range of options” to acquire Greenland, including use of the military, the White House said.

The White House told the BBC that acquiring Greenland – a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark – was a “national security priority”.

CNN reports today:

During conversations led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Trump administration told Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez that the country must cut ties with China, Iran, Russia and Cuba, and agree to partner exclusively with the US on oil production, the officials said.

Rodriguez must also agree to favor the Trump administration and US oil companies for future oil sales, they said.

Deutsche Welle reports today:

Following the attack on Venezuela and the capture of Nicolas Maduro, the US has been threatening other countries in the region.

Colombia is “very sick,” and its government is run by “a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States,” US President Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday. Asked about a military intervention in Colombia, he responded: “Sounds good to me!”

Politico is reporting today:

Privately, some Mexican officials and business leaders are concerned that President Donald Trump’s threats may soon become reality. A worst-case scenario, some fear, is a U.S. strike that results in civilian casualties and throws the country into political and economic chaos.

  1. I moved to Canada in 1974.
Back then ‘Canadian content’ was an issue fought daily in the media.
To be honest in those days I was conned into believing more was better and competition was good!
In reality it was not just the media but our home grown Canadian companies soon came under attack by the ever expanding mega companies.
The globalisation promises of yesteryear have not delivered the promised universal equity as promised!!
What has happened is that Canada has been suckered in to the USA’s continual expansion towards commerce control; nothing new here.
Sadly, Canada has been infiltrated by US ideals where a social conscience is considered Communist!
This attitude is clearly demonstrated in Alberta .
Its going to be tough to wind back these years of soft US power and influence but it has to be done
The alternative is to fold to the likes of Trump and his successors!

“President Trump declared on Wednesday evening that his power as commander in chief is constrained only by his “own morality,” brushing aside international law and other checks on his ability to use military might to strike, invade or coerce nations around the world. Asked in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times if there were any limits on his global powers, Mr. Trump said:”

“Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

““I don’t need international law,” he added. “I’m not looking to hurt people.”When pressed further about whether his administration needed to abide by international law, Mr. Trump said, “I do.” But he made clear he would be the arbiter when such constraints applied to the United States.“It depends what your definition of international law is,” he said.”

“MAGA social media users are encouraging “the diplomatic solution” of the president’s son Barron Trump, 19, marrying 18-year-old Isabella, Princess of Denmark and giving Greenland to the U.S. as a “dowry payment.”

“A stunning new poll has revealed that the majority of Americans want to abolish ICE after one of its agents fatally shot a mom of three in Minneapolis.”

“The Economist-YouGov poll published Tuesday found that 46 percent of Americans support abolishing the agency in the wake of ICE agent Jonathan Ross shooting and killing Renee Good.
Another 43 percent of respondents said they oppose getting rid of the agency, while another 12 percent said they were “not sure.””

“Half of Americans said Good’s killing was “not justified,” compared to 30 percent who said it was. ”
“Meanwhile, 71 percent said local law enforcement should be involved in investigating the incident.
The poll found 47 percent believe ICE was making America “less safe,” while only 34 percent said “more safe,” and another 49 percent said they had “very little” confidence in ICE.”

“While progressive Democrats in Congress have publicly called for abolishing ICE, party leadership has stopped short of calling for the agency’s outright disbandment.”

This feeling is all too familiar these days as the news feels increasingly like a surreal doomsday comedy.”

“Whatever you want to call that sensation — Oniönsbrechten, maybe? — I came down with a bad case of it earlier this week when I saw a tweet promoting an editorial from The Washington Post’s editorial board. The headline? “A wealth tax isn’t the best way to tax the rich.””

“Even taken on its own merits, without reading a single word of the editorial, the headline is entirely ridiculous. Taxing the rich isn’t the best way to tax the rich? Uh, okay. But what the hell—I’m feeling generous. Tell me more, Washington Post Editorial Board!”

“The piece begins by announcing that a wealth tax is broadly popular among American voters. Senator Elizabeth Warren attracted plenty of positive attention when she called for just such a wealth tax earlier this year.”

    Taxation In Europe? In 2025.

    “Shell companies”

“Another way that rich individuals can enjoy low effective tax rates is through the use of shell companies, according to the EU Tax Observatory.”

“The body notes that these firms are “in a grey zone between avoidance and evasion” in the sense that they are designed to avoid income tax.”

“Individuals sheltering assets in this way decide to place their wealth in the name of a company they control, instead of classing it as personal income. A key feature of a shell company is that it has no active business operations.”

“Withdrawals from the company are taxed at normal rates, although the taxpayer can harbour the excess in the holding firm.”

“Setting up such a structure is particularly profitable in countries where the rate of corporation tax is low.”

“Interesting countries are therefore Ireland (12.5%), Hungary (9%), Bulgaria (10%) and Cyprus (12.5%).”

“While the OECD has been working with member states to introduce a global minimum corporate tax rate of 15%, this only applies to firms earning more than €750 million.”

“More than 140 countries have signed up to the deal, but implementation is still a work in progress.”

Mr Trump knows who best deserves help!

“Trump quietly dishes out tax breaks to rich investors while slashing food aid for millions”

“The Trump administration is quietly waging an all-out regulatory war on a Biden-era corporate tax that aimed to prevent large companies from dodging their tax liabilities while reporting huge profits.”

“The corporate alternative minimum tax (CAMT) was enacted as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, Democratic legislation that former President Joe Biden signed into law in 2022. The CAMT requires highly profitable US corporations to pay a tax of at least 15% on their so-called book profits, the figures reported to shareholders.”

“As the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy has explained: “Many of the special breaks that “corporations use to avoid taxes work by allowing companies to report profits to the IRS that are much smaller than their book profits. Corporate leaders prefer to report low profits to the IRS (to reduce taxes) and high profits to the public (to attract investors).””

“But since President Donald Trump took office in January, his administration has issued guidance and regulatory proposals designed to gut the CAMT. The effort is a boon to corporate giants and rich private equity investors at a time when the Trump administration is relentlessly attacking programs for low-income Americans, including Medicaid and nutrition assistance.”

“The New York Times reported Saturday that “with its various tax relief provisions, the administration is now effectively adding hundreds of billions of dollars in new breaks for big businesses and investors” on top of the trillions of dollars in tax cuts included in the Trump-GOP budget law enacted over the summer.”

“The Treasury is empowered to write rules to help the IRS carry out tax laws passed by Congress,” the newspaper added. “But the aggressive actions of the Trump administration raise questions about whether it is exceeding its legal authority.””

“After Congress shredded incentives for wind last year and the administration imposed new permitting roadblocks, the industry’s streak of victories this week represent a significant setback in Trump’s campaign to erase the Biden administration’s clean energy agenda and deepen the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.”

“Democrats and wind supporters hailed the clean sweep in this week’s legal cases, even if the ultimate fate of those massive offshore energy projects remains to be determined.”

““Trump is getting his butt kicked again. The question is whether he learns from that,” said Democratic Rep. Scott Peters of California.”

“The legal decisions, Peters said, “reinforces what we’ve been saying: that this is illegal. It’s a bad signal to the markets.””

“Trump has made no secret of his deep dislike of wind farms — particularly those built in coastal waters. “My goal is to not let any windmill be built,” Trump told a meeting of oil executives at the White House last week. “They’re losers.””

“White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers reiterated Friday Trump’s contention that wind power represents “the scam of the century.””

By now exasperated and fed up, the EU responded to President Trump’s threats of more new tariffs with some of their own. In this case crippling tariffs. And possibly a different threat.

    Europe is America’s biggest lender.

“Vast sums are also owned by foreign governments and overseas investors. This exposure—to the tune of $8 trillion—ING pointed out, may be something European leaders decide to remind the White House of. “The most immediate and tangible reaction from the EU was that it will halt approval of its July trade deal with the US, which still requires an endorsement from the European Parliament. The European People’s Party, the largest group in parliament, said it would join other parties in blocking ratification of the accord.”

“”President Trump has triggered an avalanche that threatens to destroy decades of transatlantic cooperation,” Stefan Lofven, president of the Party of European Socialists, said in a Sunday statement. The party, whose parliamentary group is the second largest in Brussels, supports suspending the trade agreement and called on the EU to examine using the anti-coercion instrument.”

“EU considers $108 billion in retaliatory tariffs on US over Trump’s Greenland threat, FT reports
Jan 18 (Reuters) – European capitals may hit the U.S. with 93 billion euros ($107.71 billion) worth of tariffs or restrict American companies from the bloc’s market in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to NATO allies opposed to his campaign to take over Greenland, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.”

    https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202601/1353609.shtml

“The Financial Times report also reported that EU’s “retaliation measures are being drawn up to give European leaders leverage in pivotal meetings with the US president at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, officials involved in the preparations said.””

“”There are clear retaliation instruments at hand if this continues . . . [Trump’s] using pure mafioso methods,” said a European diplomat briefed on the discussion. “At the same time we want to publicly call for calm and give him an opportunity to climb down the ladder.” “The messaging is . . . carrot and stick,” they added, according to the Financial Times report.”

“On Greenland, the US and Europe are locked in a “tug-of-war,” with no substantive steps taken so far. Washington’s objective is clear: to secure substantive control over the island… Given Washington’s hardline style and reliance on pressure tactics, the US may believe it can extract concessions on certain terms. Europe, however, is unlikely to yield quickly, Zhou Mi, a senior researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, told the Global Times on Monday. ” .
