Friday’s quake was the fifth-largest recorded since 1900 and the biggest to hit Japan in three centuries. The earthquake was 900 times bigger than the one that struck Haiti in 2010 where there was a confirmed death toll of 230,000. Three days after the Japanese disaster, the known death toll in Japan is around 10,000 but could go higher.
