Climate Change

BC’s climate policy inspiration

British Columbia’s government searched the world for options before settling on a climate plan acceptable to the province’s oil and gas industry. A creative solution was found in a report by Australian satirical news source The Shovel. The original article is reproduced here.

Man announces he will quit drinking by 2050

A Sydney man has set an ambitious target to phase out his alcohol consumption within the next 29 years, as part of an impressive plan to improve his health.

The program will see Greg Taylor, 73, continue to drink as normal for the foreseeable future, before reducing consumption in 2049 when he turns 101. He has assured friends it will not affect his drinking plans in the short or medium term.

Taylor said it was important not to rush the switch to non-alcoholic beverages. “It’s not realistic to transition to zero alcohol overnight. This requires a steady, phased approach where nothing changes for at least two decades,” he said, adding that he may need to make additional investments in beer consumption in the short term, to make sure no night out is worse off.

Taylor will also be able to bring forward drinking credits earned from the days he hasn’t drunk over the past forty years, meaning the actual end date for consumption may actually be 2060.

To assist with the transition, Taylor has bought a second beer fridge which he describes as the ‘capture and storage’ method.

  1. Thank you for the laugh.
Yes its a clear example of what countries are doing. NOTHING.
Most of those governments haven’t kept their promises to their own citizens so don’t ever expect them to keep them to others. 2050, what can I up? Not drinking. How would I get through this decade and more forest fires

  2. Everyone gets the joke. But how many recognize that the joke’s on us?

The allegorical Greg Taylor is risking his own health and financial interests. Government is risking ours.

Since we are responsible for the government, we are really the butt of this joke. And only we can change that.

  4. I. too have reduced my beer intake. I use to drink 2 litres of beer a day, now I only drink 1.5 litres a day. Why do I drink less now? Cuzz, I don”t like hang-overs. I’m sure, by the time 2050 rolls around, I’ll be over 100 and my beer intake will be zero.
Every now and then I say “to hell with it”, through caution to the wind, and will drink more.
