Clean energy blowing in the wind

EDP Renewables has begun operations at its Sharp Hills wind farm 250 kilometres northeast of Calgary. Construction of the 300 megawatt project — approved by Rachel Notley’s NDP government — began in 2021. Each megawatt of capacity is costing $2 million at this $600 million facility.

By comparison, a megawatt of capacity at Site C will cost about $18 million, if the 10-year long construction project is able to produce electricity in 2025.

The Republic of the Philippines recently announced approval of ten offshore wind energy contracts with total capacity of 6,720 megawatts. As of November 2023, the Philippine’s Department of Energy has awarded 82 offshore wind contracts with total capacity of 63,360 megawatts, a number that is about 60 times the capacity of Site C.

The largest Greentech power generation system in the hemisphere is under construction in New Mexico. SunZia has raised $11 billion for the 3,500-megawatt project to create power for New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Included are high-voltage transmission lines to supply customers to the west of New Mexico. Each megawatt of capacity is costing about C$4 million.

Just recently the SunZia wind farm in New Mexico, billed as the largest clean energy project in US history, started full construction after securing $11 billion of funding in the last days of 2023.

And there are many more projects getting ready to break ground. Analysts at BloombergNEF expect wind developers to erect 8.4 gigawatts of onshore capacity in the US this year. This annual figure, they say, will keep climbing and reach nearly 20 gigawatts in 2030.

  1. The greatest disaster the David Eby will make is the continued planning for Hydro power, which will haunt the BC taxpayer for the next five decades.

The NDP, sadly, do not admit to getting it wrong and with the continued expansion with the obsolete SkyTrain light metro system have single-handedly destroyed any chance of an affordable public transit system also for the next five decades.

Eby will be reelected and like Trump, will continue on a climate change, global warming denial and will personally attack anyone who contradicts the party mantra.

The NDP is turning BC paradise into a ocean of high rise tenements for the poor and high rise condos for the wealthy, for only the very poor and the rich will be able to afford living in BC. Eby’s NDP is turning BC into a third world ……………………..
