Introduced in July 2008, British Columbia’s Carbon Tax cost BC taxpayers $24 billion before it was eliminated at the end of fiscal year 2024-2025. A Budget Backgrounder in 2008 explained:
The purpose of the carbon tax is to encourage individuals and businesses to make more environmentally responsible choices, reducing their use of fossil fuels and related emissions.

Government made no suggestion that it would make more environmentally responsible choices. The government provided subsidies worth billions of dollars to encourage increased fossil fuel consumption. That program was successful since the volume of natural gas produced in BC almost tripled after the carbon tax was imposed.

British Columbia has failed to reduce carbon emissions despite a $3.5-billion investment in the CleanBC program over seven years, and the government is hinting the lauded program may be scrapped or overhauled.
As of last December, the province’s emissions were almost exactly the same as they were in 2007.
Briefing notes released on Feb. 28 for B.C.’s new minister of environment and parks, Tamara Davidson, say the original CleanBC goals are “no longer accurate or workable.
Although natural gas production rose dramatically over time, public revenue from this non-renewable resource did not.

The Carbon Tax was nothing more than a placebo for government to pretend it was doing something about Global Warming, when it was not.
The Carbon Tax was a revenue generator, to replace tax give-aways to the wealthy by the Gordon Campbell Government and so successful, that it has been copied by the federal government.
What should have been done was not done and we suffer for this today.
Like electric cars, which is another placebo by government to pretend it is doing something about the environment, what needed to be done was not.
What needed to be done was a lack of investment in solar, wind and geothermal power production; establish regional passenger railways, and electrify those railways.
The government has done nothing and is doing nothing about Global Warming and Climate change as it is all spin, backed up by our American owned media and regurgitated by so called environmental activists, who can’t thing 20 minutes into the future.
The bellwether is the E&N Railway which needs a $4 billion rehab to turn it into a 230 km regional railway, offering a service that would provide an attractive alternative to the car. Instead the current government is spending $10 billion to add another traffic lane on the #1 or billions of dollars more to double lane the Malahat.
If anyone thinks the government is serious about global warming, think again.
