George Carlin warned us about “God damn stuff.” What he failed to mention is that the stuff fights back by capturing your attention and diverting you from watching TV or reading social media. Buried in my stuff was a 1950 manual dedicated to teaching young women their divine purpose on Earth.
It taught the weaker sex about things like:
- managing efficient kitchens;
- dishwashing;
- care of the garbage-can, refrigerators, coolers, and stoves (gas, electric, or coal);
- pasteurizing milk;
- care of the bread-box and milk bottles;
- cleaning silver, copper, brass, granite, aluminum, nickel, tin, etc.
But this book instructs on other old favourites:
- meal planning and table service;
- preserving foods;
- filling lunch boxes;
- cleaning floors and windows and caring for furniture;
- how to remove stains, launder, starch, iron, and fold.

The book is full of recipes and has advice on feeding people of all ages, including infants and “invalids.” It also reminds us that everyone should be hydrated:
Use water externally, internally, and eternally.
But that valuable book is not the only thing found today. I suspect number one son hung around the Pacific Coliseum and gathered the signatures of several professionals kind enough to please an adolescent who might have been dreaming of reaching the NHL himself.

The youngster went on to be a teacher, not a pro hockey player. One scout said he was “too nice” when he was on the ice. Mom and Dad thought that was okay.
George Carlin met his maker too soon. But his words remain. This is one of my favourite bits:

When men were men and women were women… and the Pope wasn’t deemed too dangerous to lead 1.406 billion Catholics..
Small wonder recently converted Vice President J.D. Vance, was critical of Pope Leo XIV. Mr Vance’s richest political backer and apparent mentor on all things truly Catholic, Mr Peter Thiel, sees a Pope that no one in Rome or elsewhere has imagined.

The intersection of Silicon Valley wealth and Vatican moral authority has reached a volatile boiling point following the resurfacing of highly controversial remarks. Peter Thiel, the billionaire financier and primary benefactor of Vice President JD Vance, is at the centre of a theological and political firestorm once more.
Last year, audio recordings from a private lecture series in which Thiel discussed the Antichrist and appeared to cast Pope Leo XIV as a potential manifestation of that figure leaked online. Those recordings have resurfaced, gaining renewed scrutiny and highlighting a deepening rift between the accelerationist goals of parts of the tech elite and the cautious humanism promoted by the papacy.
The controversy gained fresh momentum after Christopher Hale, a Catholic commentator and political organiser, drew attention back to Thiel’s rhetoric in an interview with Jon Favreau, the former speechwriter for Barack Obama and co-host of ‘Pod Save America.’ In the exchange, Hale described how Thiel, in leaked lectures, reportedly characterised Pope Leo XIV as a figure whose global influence mirrors that of an ‘Antichrist’ and, in Hale’s words, cast him as a kind of ‘woke American pope.’
Hale then amplified the significance of those comments in a viral X thread. ‘In leaked audio recordings, Peter Thiel revealed he told JD Vance to ignore Pope Leo XIV on moral issues, including the development of ethical AI,’ he wrote. ‘He also suggested the American pope was a tool of the Antichrist.’
Hale previously laid out his concerns in an essay for Letters of Leo. ‘In these lectures, Thiel doesn’t just flirt with the apocalyptic. He goes all in — openly discussing the Antichrist, naming Pope Leo XIV as a potential manifestation of that figure, and, most disturbingly, advising JD Vance to ignore
the Pope on moral matters altogether,’ he wrote.
The timing of this revival is particularly pointed given the current administration’s ties to Thiel’s financial network. Vance is widely considered Thiel’s protégé, and, according to Hale and other analysts, Thiel is seen as the vice president’s most important political patron. The resurfaced audio has sparked a fresh wave of criticism levelled at Thiel, with some social media users describing his language about the Pope as ‘something a demon would say’ or ‘something the Antichrist would say.’

Who alone made it possible for an American to become Pope Leo? Donald Trump!
Says who? Donald Trump!

The fight is not really about art. It is about power, legitimacy and who gets to define Christian leadership in a hyper-political age. In a series of messages on Truth Social, Trump branded Pope Leo XIV ‘WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy’ and then went much further, suggesting Leo owes his entire position to the Trump presidency.
‘Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise. He wasn’t on any list to be Pope, and was only put there by the Church because he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump,’ Trump wrote. ‘If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.’
There is no supporting evidence in the reporting that the College of Cardinals based its choice on Trump, nor that Leo was ‘only put there’ to manage relations with his administration. The claim rests solely on Trump’s account and is not corroborated by official Church records.
