Electric vehicles

Additional facts regarding Mr. Farrell’s and Mr. McCutcheon’s posts on EVs — another contribution by Mr. A. Reader.

Where is the EV market booming? SE Asia expects to distribute 23 million units. The UK loves EVs. Europe too.

Norway: 95.9% (nearly 98% in December 2025) — Almost all new cars are electric, thanks to tax exemptions, excellent charging infrastructure, and long-term policies.

China: 50-60% (NEVs including BEVs/PHEVs; crossed 50% in 2025) — Half or more of new sales are electric, driven by massive domestic production.

  • Singapore & Vietnam ~40% — Southeast Asian leaders overtaking many European nations with affordable imports.
  • Sweden ~58% — Strong Nordic performer. Denmark ~56% — Rapid uptake with public policy support.
  • Thailand ~20% — Fast-growing in ASEAN.
  • Indonesia ~15% — Surpassing the US in penetration.
  • European Union (average) ~20-25% — Steady with upcoming CO₂ targets.
  • United States ~10% — Plateaued due to policy shifts and preference for larger vehicles.

Globally, 39 countries now exceed 10% EV share in new sales (up from just 4 in 2019), showing the shift is truly worldwide.

Top Countries by Total EV Sales Volume – 2025 Full-Year Estimates

China’s dominance in sheer numbers is unmatched:

  • China ~ 12.9 million units (over half of global sales) — The world’s largest market, with strong growth in exports.
  • Europe (combined) ~ 4.3 million — Led by Germany, the UK, France, and Nordic countries.
  • North America (mainly US) ~ 1.8 million — Slight decline or stagnation in some reports.
  • Rest of the World (including Southeast Asia, Latin America): ~1.7 million — Fastest regional growth at ~48%.

The point?

While the rest of the world assesses EV risk-to-benefit ratios, North America is busy arguing horse-and-buggy issues. Without sufficient numbers of gas-consuming vehicles, the oil business must suffer.

That cannot be allowed.

Anybody ancient enough to remember the old scientifically progressive America?

It’s dead.

Instead of trying to lead the planet in energy innovation, America under “Presidente For Eternity,” Don Quixote, is busy literally attacking windmills.

  1. A memo on Norway.

Norway has an extensive passenger railway network, offering a quality service , on over 4,000 km of track of which less than 300 km is double tracked.

Ridership was 81.933 million in 2024.

BC has a comparable population with zero daily passenger service, except for a 5 trains in and 5 trains out commuter service from Mission to Vancouver, 5 days a week.

In Finland, sleeper trains are now include car carriers so you can take your car with you on overnight trips. Sweden is instituting the same sort of service.

With all the t’ado about electric cars, it is the railway makes the electric car acceptable.
