Dystopia is our neighbour

The US schools with their own police, Chris McGreal, The Guardian, Jan. 9, 2012

“…Like hundreds of schools in the state [Texas], and across large parts of the rest of the US, Fulmore Middle has its own police force with officers in uniform who carry guns to keep order in the canteens, playgrounds and lessons…

“Each day, hundreds of schoolchildren appear before courts in Texas charged with offences such as swearing, misbehaving on the school bus or getting in to a punch-up in the playground. Children have been arrested for possessing cigarettes, wearing “inappropriate” clothes and being late for school.

“In 2010, the police gave close to 300,000 “Class C misdemeanour” tickets to children as young as six in Texas for offences in and out of school, which result in fines, community service and even prison time…

“The emphasis on law and order in the classroom parallels more than two decades of rapid expansion of all areas of policing in Texas in response to misplaced fears across the US in the 1980s of a looming crime wave stoked by the crack epidemic, alarmist academic studies and the media.

“…The very young are not spared. …Texas records show more than 1,000 tickets were issued to primary schoolchildren over the past six years…

“Fines run up to $500. For poorer parents, the cost can be crippling. Some parents and students ignore the financial penalty, but that can have consequences years down the road. Schoolchildren with outstanding fines are regularly jailed in an adult prison for non-payment once they turn 17… “

  1. Welcome to Texas, a state crafted by Hitler, Kafka, and Orwell.

    A true story.

An acquaintance of mine, who worked for a “high tech” company was transfered to Dallas in the late 80's. Being born and raised in BC, he was a typical up and coming young executive on the make.

A new house and a very well paying job was all he had hoped for except:

    1) He made a mistake befriending a black co-worker and asking him to dinner.

Result: No white person in the office would talk to him.

    2) They did not go to church.

Result: Neighbourhood ladies did not talk to his wife.

    3) The 2 kids did not play nor were interested in football or cheer leading and refused to be water boy/girl, causing much angst.

Result: His wife home schooled the kids, with BC standards, which caused conflict with school authorities.

His wife and kids lasted all of six week before fleeing back to BC and only after a nasty exchange with the school principal (she called him a child molester)and a Baptist Pastor (she called him the anti-Christ).

With wife and family gone, the poor chap lasted barely a month and pleaded with head office for a return to BC or Canada. The office ostracized him, except for his black friend and a burnt cross was placed on his lawn.

He quit, losing his job and returned home.

He now lives happily on Bowen island with wife and operates a “local” business in Horseshoe Bay; his kids reentered the BC school system where they received counseling for abuse and his black friend and family from Dallas are regular visitors to Bowen Island.

  2. Welcome to the N.A.U.

Read: Harper gives a speech in New York, at the Council of Foreign Relations. This was Sept. 25/2007.

Watch out for Obama and Harper's border deals, they stink to high heaven.
