U.N. “climate change is out of control”

Global air temperatures for the week ended July 5 were the highest ever recorded. That led the U.N. Secretary General to say climate change is out of control. Last month António Guterres stated that countries must start phasing out oil, coal and gas – not just emissions – and demanded fossil fuel companies “cease and desist” measures that aim to “knee-cap” climate progress.

Regardless of science, the corporate world and governments in Canada remain determined to increase fossil fuel production and consumption. Under the NDP, British Columbia continues to provide direct and indirect subsidies to ensure increased output of products that threaten the survival of future generations.

Undoubtedly, there’s a connection between the following chart and the preceding one:

The recent experience of an Idaho meteorologist shows how successful the oil and gas lobby has been in convincing the uninformed masses to help corporate merchants of death:

DES MOINES, Iowa — The harassment started to intensify as TV meteorologist Chris Gloninger did more reporting on climate change during local newscasts — outraged emails and even a threat to show up at his house. . .

Gloninger’s experience is all too common among meteorologists across the country who are encountering reactions from viewers as they tie climate change to extreme temperatures, blizzards, tornadoes and floods in their local weather reports. . .

  1. I should have added, there is really no learning to live with it. People die from extreme heat, they drown if the water sweeps them away or they can’t’ get through the standing water, the amount of rain can cause mud slides so people are buried in them, etc. If we are going to continue as we are, we will have to rebuild most of the world and still the working people on the earth will die. The billionaires will of course be fine for a while, until the guards they hired turn on them.

“smug Canada stands”. Agreed lots of Canadians are “smug’. Many Canadians don’t pay much attention to climate change and pollution because they’re trying to earn a living, get their kids to school on time, finding enough money to keep them in sports, pay the mortgage, etc. They just don’t think about the dangers of climate change until its too late. People tend not to look at the future that requires them to make changes. The MSM doesn’t do an adequate job of keeping people informed. When the Fraser valley farm land flooded, it was awful, but most did not think ahead and put “defenses” in place to deal with flooding. It was too expensive. Now it doesn’t seem so expensive, but many people play the odds and hope for the best.

  2. e.a.g
“We have climate change and we either learn to live with it”

The problem is that some parts of the world inhabited by us
now cannot “live with it” and the problem is growing in scale.

C02 products being exported by countries really need to be assessed
their climate impact on the exporting countries CO2 contribution
profiles and not on the consuming countries profiles.

Put that in place and when factoring in BC (LNG) and Alberta
(Fort Mac) it would be interesting where smug Canada stands.

  3. Was watching the American news tonight, specifically the weather report. In eastern parts of the U.S.A. there were floods all over the place, roads covered in water, etc. Then they moved on to the south western part of the U.S.A. and the heat was extreme in some areas it was to be 110 degrees.

In Canada we have had forest fires all over the place and then flooding in Quebec.

It really would be nice if it all could even out but alas that is not going to happen. We have climate change and we either learn to live with it or get with the agenda and change how we live and governments stop catering to corporate interests. No tax breaks for big oil, mining companies, etc. Government then needs to get a grip and start changing some of the game rules regarding the use of some of these products.

Another e.g. of pollution is all the clothing made over seas which are purchased here, and then wind up in places like Chile in massive dumbs. This may help China’s economy but not our enviornment nor theirs. if China doesn’t deal with the pollution they create Canada ought to simply impose tarrifs on the goods so that there is no economic advantage to importing it into Canada and other countries. As a first step Canada ought to stop exporting coal to China and stop permitting the “ugly polluting” coal of the U.S.A. to be moved through Canada to our ports for export. Really, if American workers won’t handle it, why would Canadian workers do it. Our health and enviornment is just as important. Expanding that Delta Port ought to be stopped also. It does nothing for our enviornment.

For Canada to have more control over oil, gas, coal we could start by insisting no more foreign ownership of these resources by non Canadians. ”

Canada also needs to start ensuring we do not build on agricultural land. As the climate changes so does the ability to grow food. Some areas in the world which currently produce various food products may not be able to do so in the future due to flooding, fires, drought, hurricans, etc. Fortunately we had a Premier back in the 70s Dave Barrett who brough us the Agricultural Land Reserve.

My sibling used to say they were glad we were born when we were, because we got to see the world as still beautiful. By the time things turned very ugly, we’d be dead. The sibling exited stage left almost two years ago. As children we never saw the number of forest fires that we do now. For all the years I drove through the Fraser Canyon I never thought I’d see one of the towns burn to the ground.

I do worry about what the world will look like when the children of today are our age.
