BC revenues from fossil gas

Since 2007, subsidies to fossil gas producers, by way of royalty credits taken and accrued, were close to $16 billion in current dollars.

Royalties are affected by market value, so it is not surprising that government enjoyed a higher level of royalty revenues from this resource in fiscal year 2023. However, since government has discontinued competitive bidding for petroleum and gas rights, FY 2023 lags behind total revenue produced in earlier years when gas prices were high.

Another factor is the volume of gas extracted. Production in FY 2023 was 2.5x that in FY 2009. Yet 2023 revenue was close to one-half of gas revenue in 2009, using current dollars.

  1. The entire provincial house of cards is beginning to tumble, with the “bought”government doing nothing, achieving nothing and leaving a legacy of homelessness, drug addiction and hopelessness.

The province has ceased to be a province, rather it has become a small mega state within Metro Vancouver, leaching off the rest of the province and those outside this “Metro” sphere of politcal influence are basically on their own.

It will end badly and sooner than one would think.
